Not since the golden era of the showbands at Dreamland Ballroom in the 60s, had Athy witnessed anything like the excitement at the Clanard Court Hotel Function Room as a capacity crowd waited in eager anticipation for Tom Cooper.

The queues had formed almost two hours ahead of showtime, but nobody minded the wait; they knew “The White Knight” was going to be worth waiting for, as many of them had seen him perform with the Athy Musical and Dramatic Society, and they knew that when he sang the songs of Joe Dolan, he WAS Joe Dolan! All around the hall the buzz of excitement swelled even more as phones were held aloft and women got ready to scream!!!

 

Then the explosion happened, as Tom Cooper, dressed in a pristine white suit made his way to the stage. All I could compare it to was Sylvester Stallone striding up to the ring in “Rocky” This however, was more exciting, this was happening right in front of us.

 

Inhibitions were cast to the wind, women of all ages shrieked and screamed, even the men got in on the act! Younger punters definitely got Tom Cooper, realising how thrilling his performance was on a cold January night.

He did them all, the songs of Joe Dolan and more, backed by a fantastic band which complemented his extraordinary voice to perfection.

 

Did it work? You bet! He left us all screaming for more and more and more! Tom Cooper, superstar in the making!
